Mothers Day

Last year, on my first mothers day, I was too afraid to brave a restaurant with a newborn. I wish I had been that smart this year! We went out to a delicious and elegant mothers' day brunch at 1789 with my parents. This restaurant holds a very special place in the Diehl household because it is where my wonderful husband broke out into tears in front of all our friends. Oh wait, did I write that? I mean, it was the restaurant where we had our rehearsal dinner before our wonderful wedding. (it's mothers' day, I get to poke fun at the Mr. just once)

Anyhow. Typically Julia is an angel in restaurants. She loves to say hi to everyone and eat fancy food. But I think she KNEW it was Mothers Day, so she wanted me to work for my special treatment. All morning she was cranky. I tried to anticipate trouble and divert it by packing the typical arsenal of grahams, pretzels, toys, and most importantly, lots of cheese. It went well for a while. Julia was in her gorgeous fancy dress and she was not trying to pull plates or the tablecloth off the table. She managed to eat off her place mat despite the fact that the suction cups don't stick to tablecloths.

Then she got restless. Brian saved the day by bringing her outside a couple times. And I put her in my lap a couple times. I forgot to pack the sacred applesauce (that is the present miracle pill when she's whiney). With constant shhhing and creating diversions, we made it through brunch and were able to go outside and show Grandma how we're starting to walk. We then went for a walk around Georgetown and to the chapel where we got married. We got back to the car and Julia sang in her most beautiful voice for the ride home. Noooo, she didn't sing. She cried. She screamed. Then she fell asleep. It was a whirlwind of a morning (it kind of reminded me of Christmas morning) and I was exhausted when we got home. But then I got to go shopping all by myself. Now THAT was a great treat on mother's day. And from the looks of the store I was in, many moms do that exact same thing.

Despite the exhaustion, the frustration, the concern that I'm not doing something right, I wouldn't change a thing. I have a beautiful, healthy, happy (most of the time) baby girl and a husband who just is indescribably supportive and wonderful and fun. I have the best family in the world (including my number one, Bella). Happy Mothers Day all.

This is what I have been doing.

Yes. I haven't updated anyone in a while. Truthfully, there hasn't been much camera action. Between packing up, moving out, moving in, unpacking, and the notorious fourth quarter of work... and a computer that is dying (are you listening, Santa?). I can't get anything done! But I did create something at work that I'm super proud of. You should watch it. Over and over. And share it. And like it. That's the thumbs up button. I art directed, executive produced and helped promote this video on all the free channels that we know of. Including this one! My blog. So enjoy.

Fond memories

I know. It's been a while. But days like today...with the clear blue sky and the crisp air, remind me of our week at the beach. That happened a month ago now. How things change in one month. Lots to update everyone on. But first, let's share some photos from the amazing, incredible, fun, giggly week we had with these guys . It was an awesome week. The kids did so great together. And they were so much fun. The only photos I don't have, that I wish I could share, were from our first night there. I took the four kids down to the beach and the sun was setting and shining through the clouds. The ocean was so warm. We put our feet in. One thing led to another. And then Julia, Alex and Annalisa were swimming in their clothes. But never happier. The smiles I saw that night were priceless. I will never forget the sun shining in their eyes and how happy they were. Which was good, because that night of swimming held them until Thursday. The red "no swimming" flags were u...

Sleepless nights

For the past week and a half, the entire house has been waking to sounds similar to this coming from that little Schuyler body. We've tried feeding the kid more. We've tried putting her to bed earlier and later and with less blanket and more music. I guess she's just at that age when she enjoys being a night owl. Hopefully it won't last long. Luckily, Schuyler is super cute and very happy when we go in to see her. She hugs so tight and tries to eat your face. It's very comforting...except that her talons are super sharp and she doesn't sit still long enough to make it easy to cut them. As I keep hearing, this too shall pass. And I'm sure we'll miss our midnight rendezvous adventures and snuggle sessions. But, truly, we just want a few hours of quiet sleep. Schuyler, if you can read this, there is lots of fun to have in the daylight hours too!
